Law and Regulations
Is the insurance inspection of fork lift truck also a thorough examination?
The simple answer is it might be. But of course that answer is not good enough. The facts are as follows:

• A Thorough Examination is a legal requirement.

• The Competent Person who carries out a Thorough Examination is required to make a written Report of Thorough Examination.

• This report must comply with Schedule 1 of the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER 98).

A copy of this schedule is on the FLTA website at www.fork-truck.org.uk so it is easy to check. Some insurance inspections are thorough examinations and some are not. It is important that employers know the difference. It is the employer who is legally responsible for making sure that Thorough Examinations are carried out in accordance with LOLER 98.
